Iconic images. Check. Innovative materials. Check. Out of this world artistic expression. Check. Andre Woolery is a New York visual artist who is creating some amazing pieces with some pretty surprising mediums. His work is fascinating in his painted piece, Erykah Badu. And truly entrances as you look at his portraits of President Obama and Jay-Z, both made using thousands upon thousands of thumbtacks.

Not only is his work fascinating, but I have to say I love his website as well. To understand an artist's motivation is important, and Woolery expresses his with a description of his vision, and a video piece alongside many descriptions.

An Update on the AphroChic Book

I thought I would share with you an update on how the AphroChic Book is coming along. I am learning so much about publishing, and being a writer. It's completely true that writing a book is like having a baby. It's hard work that requires a lot of attention, nurturing, prayers that it will turn out ok, and that eats up any time you used to set aside for sleeping or going out. At the same time it is absolutely rewarding, being able to put your ideas down on paper, to direct a shoot with your vision, and to know that one day this piece of work will be available for others to bring home and enjoy.

If you haven't already, be sure to follow the Behind The Book Tumblr page where we post behind-the-scenes photos from our shoots. At the end of each shoot we like to take a photo with the entire team, including the homeowners. It's a great way to document the experience, and the team that makes every shoot a success. The image above is from one of our latest photo shoots in New York. We have four shoots down, and twelve more to go. Next stop...Brooklyn.

Beautiful Ethiopian Mesobs

The internet is an amazing place to explore. In an instant you can learn about a handicraft or work of art from a place halfway across the world. That's what I love about it. The other day, while perusing the web I came across an image of a traditional Ethiopian basket, or mesob. The colors left me awe-struck, and I immediately wanted to learn more.

These colorful woven baskets are actually tables. Traditional Ethiopian meals are eaten on the mesob. The top of the mesob is lifted off and a platter is placed in the center of the basket table. I have been to an Ethiopian restaurant before, but never had this experience. I have to look for a place here in the states that serves the meal over these amazing baskets.

You can find some beautiful images of mesobs on the web. I am still looking for a place that sells these gorgeous baskets. I would love to have one in my home.

If you come across a website, or know of anyone who imports them, please let me know. For now, let's all just enjoy how beautiful these handcrafted pieces are.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

That is me standing at the base of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington DC. My husband and I went last month to see the amazing sculpture of Dr. King in person. The walk to the memorial felt like a pilgrimage. We walked past the Washington Monument, by the Reflecting Pool, and I couldn't help but think about the March on Washington, and started to feel the weight of all of those who had come before me to ensure that I could have a better life. When we walked up to Dr. King the tears just began flowing. It is amazing to have such appreciation and admiration for a man I never knew. His quest for justice touched my life so profoundly, and so today I thank Dr. King and all of those who fight against injustice. You have changed the world.

If you are in or near DC, I encourage you to visit the memorial. It is a truly a moment that you will never forget.

Blandine Bardeau Neon Necklaces

The work of London-based, French fashion and jewelry designer Blandine Bardeau is thrilling. I spotted one of her uber-cool necklaces on Design Milk's Pinterest board, and cannot stop exploring her work.

Upon first seeing her neon necklace collection, my immediate thought was that they are a modern day translation of the Masai ceremonial wedding necklace - beaded necklaces with a host of color and pattern. Whether intended that way or not, these pieces have a particular African feel to me.

I love the juicy colors and the jelly-look of each piece (remember jelly necklaces?!).

And I already have a place in mind for one of these eclectic necklaces. I hope she ships from London!

I am a huge fan of the Gus* Modern brand. Clean lines, a modern aesthetic, and industrial design all come together to create an amazing furniture collection. Their pieces are foundational. With a line of chairs, sofas, tables, storage and lighting, Gus* Modern offers all the basics you need to furnish your home. Here's what's new from their Spring 2012 collection.

The Spencer Bi-Sectional is at the top of my wish list for this year. It's elegant with tufted details, and it's eco-friendly, made with FSC-certified wood.

These Prairie Tables are shaped to match Canadian provinces. The tables can be nested together and used in various configurations. What a clever idea!

The Truss Chair in vivid green is one of my favorite pieces. It's mid-century modern meets traditional handcrafted design with an interlocking wood frame.

And I absolutely love this Annex Cabinet. Warm walnut grain comes together with a stainless steel base. The final look is modern and rustic all at once.

Wow! It's amazing that 2012 is here. I can't believe we are now twelve years into the 21st Century. I have so many goals for this year, and I thought I would share of my personal goals with you. I put them on my iPhone reminder list (I'm seriously addicted to it), so when I've achieved my goals I can check them off and actually feel like I've accomplished something at the end of the year. What are your resolutions for 2012?

I can hardly believe that 2011 is about to come to a close. It has been one of the most incredible years here at AphroChic. This year I left my job, started working on my company full-time, moved to Philadelphia, got a book deal, partnered with new retailers (you can now find AphroChic items at Busybee Design in Philly), and have watched my dreams come true. It's truly been a blessed year, and I can only hope that 2012 will bring more incredible adventures for me to share with all of you.

I will be taking the rest of the year off to enjoy time with family, and meet some crucial writing deadlines for the book. But, don't worry I am not going to totally disappear. You can find me on:

I was struck when I saw photos from this wonderful exhibition filled with red and gold. The work is that of architect and designer Noa Haim of Collective Paper Aesthetics. Noa creates fascinating products and structures out of paper. One of her latest exhibits included interactive projects where parents and children came together to create unique structures out of the paper game presented.

The imagery from the event is fascinating and beautiful. A wonderful participatory project. You can find out more about Noa's unique work and her exhibits on her blog. It's chocked full of incredible paper structures. Enjoy!

Modern Quilts by Luke Haynes

Have you ever seen something that just left you in awe? Well, I was absolutely awe-struck when I discovered the work of Luke Haynes. His quilts are like nothing I have ever seen before. Using quilting as a way of artistic expression, Luke creates absolute works of art through simple scraps of fabric.

Some of my favorite pieces in Luke's collection include his very cool self-portrait above; this American Nostalgia quilt featuring President Obama;

this gorgeous quilted portrait of Frankie Manning;

and this lovely quilt he has termed The Boss.

It's amazing the imagery that Luke creates through fabric. I am so happy to have found his work, and am definitely thinking about getting a commissioned piece of my own. What could be a more wonderful family heirloom than an original Luke Haynes quilt?

David Bromstad Exhibits at Art Basel

Oh how I wish I was in Miami today. Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the world's largest art shows, begins this evening. From December 1st - 4th, the international art world will meet in South Florida to view the work of the 2,000 + artists who will be presenting. One of those artists will be the very first HGTV Design Star, David Bromstad.

David will be hosting an incredible 3-day event at the Z Ocean Hotel South Beach. His first public art exhibition, David will be transforming the hotel lobby into his own personal art gallery, with his signature style and pop art. If you are a blogger or member of the press in the area, you may want to check out tonight's special VIP event. And don't worry, there will also be a public opening to view David's work on December 2nd and 3rd.

I was so excited to meet UK designer Andrew Tanner in person at Maison et Objet this fall. I have admired his collection of of modern British china for sometime. Andrew's work is a testament to something I find exciting in design, the integration of the modern and the traditional. Tiffany's philosophy: Your home should be your haven, which both relaxes and inspires you. Your home should reflect you.

Since 1846, this company has been designing colorful fashion fabrics, and personally, I want all of them!

At Vlisco, they are inspired by West and Central African culture, and that inspiration is translated into vibrant patterns that can be used for creating the most gorgeous gowns, to luxurious home furnishings.

I am going to be taking the next week off to work on the book. It's time to fully dive into the writing process, and I'm going to need some quiet days with no blog, facebook, or twitter to distract me. Before I go, I had to share with you a photo that truly touched me this week - an image of the Obamas at the MLK Memorial dedication ceremony. Looking at this photo, I truly had to reflect upon Dr. King, his dream and how it has come to fruition in the lives of extraordinary people like President Obama, and even in the lives of little people like me. When lighting your living room select a mix of light fixtures to give the space a dynamic lighting design. Start with selecting the overall room lights (recessed lights and/or floor lamps). Add table lamps to highlight intimate vignettes and don’t forget to incorporate art lights to show off your prized artwork. When designing the lighting for your bedroom, think outside of the box. Our first instinct is to use matching table lamps as bedside lighting. Hanging pendant lights or swing arm light fixtures are other unique options that give your bedroom a more personalized design.

What is the latest in lighting trends? Any new contemporary lighting or designer lighting that is new to Lamps Plus?

How I love Morocco. It's the one place I have always dreamed of going to that I haven't been to yet. Moroccan poufs, tea tables, and pierced lanterns are always at the top of my list when searching for new decor, but these pieces are hard to find here in the states. The HGTV Holiday Shoot

Last week I was away for a two-day trip to New York. One of my favorite places (really it's my second home), it was fabulous to spend two days in the city for an HGTV holiday shoot and blogger brunch. The folks at HGTV really know how to spoil their bloggers, and they definitely did by allowing us to spend a day behind-the-scenes with HGTV talent, and pose as extras in a holiday commercial that will be airing in a couple of months. The set was in a penthouse apartment in Brooklyn. Fabulous views! I wish I could have moved right in. Here are some pics from what was a truly awesome day.

Here's a quick shot of the HGTV hosts during a break in the shoot. Some of my favorite hosts were there, including Emily Henderson, Bob and Cortney Novogratz, Jon and Drew from Property Brothers, Antonio Ballatore, Tanika Ray, Genevieve Gorder, and the fabulous Thom Filicia.

My hubs was there too. He watched the shoot from the screening room. It's the coolest room where you get to see how the producers come to a decision on which takes to use, what to reshoot, etc.

I got to catch up with two of my fellow HGTV bloggers, Lili Zarghami and Brian Patrick Flynn who are a riot!

I was excited to take a pic with one of my favorite people, Lindsey Weidhorn from HGTV (you may also follow her on Tumblr - The Inside Stoop), and Cortney Novogratz. Cortney doesn't know this, but it was when I read an article about Sixx Design in The New York Times that I became inspired to make AphroChic my full-time job. Although I've interviewed both Cortney and Bob in the past, it was really wonderful to meet them in person. They are so humble, and laid-back. A very inspirational couple.

Thom Filicia was so sweet, and actually remembered meeting me at an Elle Decor party in High Point. I was so surprised! And it was so nice to meet Emily from my favorite HGTV show, Secrets From A Stylist in person. She is definitely one of the world's most genuine people. I just love her! Nicole Cohen from Sketch 42 blog was also there. Have you seen her paintings? They are amazing!

At brunch the next day I connected with two of my Spelman sisters - Tanika Ray, host of Design Star and HGTV'd, and Jade who works for the network. It was fantastic to meet some incredible Spelman women.

Brunch at Bond 45 was the perfect way to end the two days. I absolutely cannot say enough about how much I love HGTV. I feel so lucky to work with a network that showcases so many amazingly talented people. And, everyone, and I mean, every single person was so nice. I really loved it, and hope to connect with the HGTV family again soon.

Rebranded as Stylelist Home, it is the go-to site for design inspiration and expert advice from some of your fave designers and bloggers. The line-up of experts is an exciting one, with everyone from Grace Bonney, to John Robshaw, to yours truly!

Scenes From Paris: Maison et Objet

As I said yesterday, presenting at Maison et Objet was an exhilarating experience. One of the most amazing parts was decorating the very first AphroChic trade show booth. My sister came from Washington DC to help my husband and I style the booth. It was definitely a family affair. After days of waiting for bags to arrive with all of our items (note: I will never take United Airlines again. They lose everything!) we had one day to transform a 10 x 10 white space into a little AphroChic showroom. Here are some behind-the-scenes pics of how it all came together.

My sister and I made a trip to IKEA Paris. The great thing is that it's pretty similar to IKEA anywhere else, and with the help of Google Translate we were able to figure out the French words for linens, frames, etc., to help us find items to finish off the space.

Angela is a talented designer who can do florals as well. We filled the space with bright pops of color, including flowers to make it feel warm and bright.

Bryan also got into the design mix, hanging shower curtains, moving furniture, and helping to frame our wallpaper samples for display.

We worked with some of the furniture laid out in the design plan by our summer interior design intern, Ambra Hyman.

It started out like this.

And ended like this - really bright with lots of color! Completely AphroChic.

Our Brooklyn pillows made quite a hit.

And The Beat Shower Curtain was particularly well received by Scandinavian retailers.

We also had a beautiful tabletop display with some nice natural touches. I wish I could have brought these succulents home.

All-in-all it was one of the best times of my life! I'm so happy my family was a part of this moment for AphroChic. Together we are taking our brand to new heights.

Scenes From Paris

I thought I would share with you some photos from my recent trip to Paris. To say that it was an amazing experience is an understatement. Being able to travel across the Atlantic to present my home decor line to an international audience was an absolute dream come true! It was a fabulous time spent with lots of friends, old and new, family members and all of you who were tweeting with me along the way. Here are just a few photos from my travels.

A look inside our lovely apartment.

This is the flower market I would see daily on Rue Houdon near the apartment where we stayed in Montmartre. I absolutely loved the window display featuring old-school telephones. The colors are beautiful.

My sister, Angela Belt, and I had so much fun peeking into floral shops in Paris. She was the best to come all the way from D.C. to help us set up our booth!

At the top of the hill in Montmartre is the cutest macaroon shop. I have to say, the pistachio was my favorite.

I also couldn't visit Paris without making a trip to Ladurée.

The line of beautiful pastries is even more gorgeous in person. I had two of the most delicious macaroons I have ever tasted! Going is such an experience.

Every night we ate dinner in our little neighborhood. It was so nice to feel like we had a home in Paris.

This J&B utensil holder caught my attention at one of the restaurants. Me and my husband's initials! I just had to snap a shot.

And this view I will put to memory. A view of the Basilica, just a few blocks from our apartment. Just stunning.

I will be back tomorrow with more photos from our experience at Maison et Objet. I can't wait to show you more!

Effie's Paper

A gal can never have enough good stationery. I am always on the hunt for cute cards to send with birthday gifts or thank you presents, and the stationery at Effie's Paper is bold, colorful, and just my style.

Kalyn Johnson Chandler is the brains behind this lovely card company, named for her grandmother, Effie Hayes. The collections of mod notecards are a fun and stylish alternative to e-cards, with cool names like The Jetsetter, The Urbanite, and Bon Mots.

Kalyn's love of pattern and design shows through in each card that is accompanied by a bright envelope in colors like fuchsia, teal, purple and coral.

Her illustrations are cool and quirky, featuring what I imagine to be a high school class, maybe from the Chicago suburb where Tabitha is from.

Decorate: 1,000 Ideas For Every Room in Your Home

One of the highlights of this week was meeting the lovely Holly Becker, author of the Decor8 blog, and her first design book, Decorate: 1,000 Design Ideas For Every Room In Your Home. I was so excited when I found out that Holly was coming to Philadelphia as part of her US book tour. I sat in on her moodboard demonstration at the Anthropologie in Philadelphia, and then got my own signed copy of her book. Here are a few photos from what was an absolutely divine design evening in Philly.

During my visit to Brooklyn last week to scout homes for the AphroChic book, my husband, sister and I stopped by MoCADA, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art in Brooklyn. While the main museum was closed, we were able to catch a beautiful exhibit, Dandy Lion: Articulating a Re(de)fined Black Masculine Identity, curated by Shantrelle P. Lewis.

Dandy Lion takes a look at the modern day Black man, challenging stereotypes about African-American masculinity, and introduces us to the "New Age dandy" - sophisticated African-American men who are not afraid of their identity, and who are gentlemen with a stylized "swag".

While the photo exhibit just ended at MoCADA, it is now about to go international, showing in Amsterdam in September and in New Jersey in October. Check out One Nigerian Boy for more news on this amazing exhibit, and the book project that is in the works. I absolutely can't wait to see more!

Style Talk: Bob & Cortney Novogratz

You know that I always love bringing you a new Style Talk interview, and today's segment is really special. I have been inspired for years by the amazing interior designs by Bob and Cortney Novogratz. I first spotted the two in The New York Times with their six children. Their one-of-a-kind style immediately caught my eye, with rooms full of color, pattern, art, and absolutely fresh design. Rock stars in the design world, the couple brought us into their reality on the BRAVO show 9 By Design, showing us how they worked as a husband-and-wife team balancing both family life (with seven kids!) and their design firm all at once. It was an inspiring story for all up-and-coming husband-and-wife duos, like AphroChic! And this year they are back on TV with their new show Home by Novogratz on HGTV which is all about the couple's amazing design work.

Today, Bob and Cortney stopped by to tell us a little about their new show, their passion for design, and some of the new things they're working on, like their paint line for Stark Paint. They were also nice enough to share some sneak peeks from upcoming episodes of Home by Novogratz. But enough of me gushing about these two (I could go on and on), I'm turning things over to Bob and Cortney.

Congratulations on the new show! It's been great watching the first episodes. How has the experience been moving from BRAVO to HGTV?
The new show has been a lot of fun and a lot of work! We had to come up with ideas (and execute them) for thirteen different episodes. But you know we love the challenge! We really liked the BRAVO experience, and now we are enjoying the new HGTV experience. We have to say that everybody at HGTV has been so supportive. It is a great atmosphere. As for the BRAVO show, we are glad that the kids are not the focal point of our show anymore. They are getting older (we have three teenagers now!) and it's nice for them to have more privacy.

Our readers would like to know what inspires each of you as a designer? How do you keep your designs fresh and original?
We pay attention to young, talented people and what they are up to. We try to keep up with everything that is around us. We love to take a risk, and we love change. All of those factors contribute!

So much of the fun of watching the two of you is seeing the dynamic of a husband-and-wife creative team. Is there anything that you feel that each of you does better because of your partnership?
We enjoy the partnership aspect. We have each other when things are great and going well, and have each other when they go wrong. It's also really helpful to have another person you really trust to give a second opinion. And frankly, we just enjoy hanging out with each other. We are lucky that way.

Can you tell us about your new paint collection with Stark Paints? It's clear that a lot of thought went into your new line. Creating a line that is "water-based," "environmentally responsible," and "kid-and-pet friendly" shows that you are concerned about more than just color. How do these concerns affect your overall approach to design?
Regarding the colors, we try to be true to ourselves, and we always want to be different. Also, we are trying to streamline the process of picking the right color. You want the perfect shade, not a dozen or more tones of the same color that are really close and drive you crazy trying to find the right one! We have hopefully eliminated the pain of finding what works for you. Keep it simple and keep it fun—that's our motto. As to making it “green”, with seven kids, how could that not be important. We want to preserve as much as we can for our kids and for their kids. That is one of the reasons why we work with a lot of repurposed goods and artifacts in our designs.

Charitable work seems to have always been a big part of your design focus. Tell us a little about the School of Rock Project you recently did. How was that experience?
It was such an amazing project, and we treasure working with kids. Kids mean a lot to use, but I guess that is obvious! Winegard Elementary really needed some help, and it made us so happy to give those kids some inspiration and the materials to make music, and in vibrant, stimulating surroundings. The principal of the school was a true rockstar, and we were privileged to work with her.

After seven kids, two shows, and scores of projects, interviews, and flipped houses, we can't wait to see what's next for the Novogratz family. Any hints?
Cool retail products (a line of home decor coming later this year!), on a budget commercial gigs, and hopefully some surprises. We feel like we are just getting going!

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith on the Cover of Architectural Digest

I love getting emails from Architectural Digest about their latest issue, and this time when I opened my email I was absolutely floored. I have been a fan of Will Smith ever since Parents Just Don't Understand, and it has been amazing to watch his career grow. The new issue of AD showcases Will and Jada's fabulous family retreat near Calabasas, CA.

Full of amazing one-of-a-kind touches, this home away from home features handcrafted elements and adobe architecture inspired by Persian, Moroccan, Spanish and Southwest American cultures.

The global influences can be spotted throughout this massive 25,000 square foot interior, including Moroccan lanterns, Brazilian chairs and pieces upholstered in kilims.

Pick up the September issue of AD (I just spotted a copy in New York) to view the full home. I promise you won't want to miss this issue. It's incredibly inspiring.

I thought I would start this week of with some beautiful art. I spotted the work of Eric Cahan on one of my favorite blogs, Design For Mankind. Eric's Sky Series immediately caught my attention. He captures sunrises and sunsets in places around the world. The colors in each piece are amazing. Better than what Pantone could ever reveal to us, the natural colors in these skyscapes are so inspiring.

I remember seeing skies like these when visiting Chile, where they have the most pink sunsets, and Jamaica, where the sun is more golden than anything I have ever seen before.

Eric uses as many as four different cameras to capture each image. Chromium prints of each image are produced numerous times until a seamless piece is created.

APHROCHIC BOOK COMING FALL 2013!!!

I am so excited to reveal some BIG NEWS to you. A few months ago I received one of the best emails of my life. It was from an editor at Clarkson Potter who was interested in publishing an AphroChic book. Soon, my husband and I were in New York at the Random House building having a meeting about a possible book. We submitted a proposal, and weeks later we had a book deal! Clarkson Potter is the leading publisher of lifestyle books like Undecorate, Details, and the Big Book of Small, Cool Spaces. To know that our book will be among these amazing design books is exciting and incredibly humbling.

I want to thank all of you so much for your support. Without you none of this would have happened. You are all a part of this amazing journey, and you will continue to be as I give you some behind-the-scenes info on how the book is developing here on the blog, and also ask you to submit your homes! Soon Bryan and I will be traveling around the country, identifying homes that really reflect AphroChic style. And I hope some of you can be a part of this.

APHROCHIC: MODERN.SOULFUL.STYLE will come out Fall 2013. It's going to be one amazing journey friends. Let's all enjoy the ride!

Matchbook Magazine + AphroChic + Mochatini = A Beautiful Photo Shoot!

It's not every day that you get to have amazing designers, a magazine editor, a fab photographer, and a group of your best friends over for a photo shoot, but that is exactly what happened at my place on Saturday, July 16th. We were all getting together to do a photo shoot for Matchbook Magazine on my rooftop deck.

The day was filled with sun, sangria, bright colors, some AphroChic patterns and lots of laughter. Manvi Drona-Hidalgo from Mochatini and I had been working for months on the design of the space, design texting our favorite ideas back and forth, and it all came together in one beautiful shoot!

You can see the full article, A Rooftop Soiree, in issue 7 of Matchbook Magazine. It all starts on page 80.

Is it me, or does HGTV's Summer programming rock!? I cannot get enough of the new shows, and am loving Home by Novogratz. I have had a design crush on Bob and Cortney's style since I saw their first show on BRAVO, but Home by Novogratz is even better! Instead of trying to be a reality TV show, this a true design show that features the innovative, edgy and eclectic ideas that this couple is known for.

Last week Emily Henderson from Secrets From A Stylist tweeted this gorgeous sneak peek of the room that will be featured on the Season 2 finale of her show. Why am I so excited? Well, for one, I love the show and never miss an episode, but this season's finale will be especially dear to my heart because AphroChic's The Vibe Wallpaper will be featured!!!!

Book Love: The Meghan Method

I recently received a signed copy of the new book, The Meghan Method in the mail. This book by Meghan Carter breaks down the interior design process in an approchable and fun way. I showed the book to my sister, a visual for Room & Board, who wanted her own copy immediately. She loved all of Meghan's worksheets and sample plans.

Meghan spent two years traveling cross country and interviewing interior designers about their methods, and in the end developed who her own concrete viewpoint - The Meghan Method.

In a world of floor plans, space planning, and technical aspects of design, Meghan has synthesized the design process and brought in some wonderful practical planning skills that she gleaned from talking to designers across the country.

I am in my second year of studying Advertising and Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. The opportunity to learn both sides of the field and understand how the two work together makes my goal of becoming a creative director seem that much closer. AphroChic Pillows In Anthology Magazine!

It has always been my dream to walk into a store, look through some things, and then spot one of our pillows. Well, my dream came true earlier this week when I stopped by Anthropologie in Philadelphia. As I was leafing through the latest issue of Anthology Magazine I spotted two of our Haze Mimosa pillows in the home of Hello!Lucky founder Sabrina Moyle (on page 101 of the Spring 2011 issue). It's always so nice to see a product that you've created in someone's home, and I was thrilled to see that Sabrina had bought our pillows from Lotus Bleu in San Francisco, and incorporated them into her bright and beautiful decor.

Besides seeing my pillows in the issue, every time I read it I just fall more and more in love with Anthology. The magazine is gorgeous, and I can't wait to see issue 4 in Anthropologie soon.

Meet AphroChic Intern Ambra Hyman

I am so excited to have two incredible interns on board with us this Summer. Today, I would like to introduce you to our interior design intern, Ambra Hyman. Both Bryan and I really enjoyed meeting Ambra who is getting her degree in Architecture and Interior Design at Drexel University here in Philadelphia. But instead of me gushing on and on about her (she's fabulous!), I'll let her introduce herself to all of you.

Hello facebook friends, twitteristas and blogger buddies I wanted to announce that I am a design intern for AphroChic. My name is Ambra Hyman and currently I am studying Interior Architecture and Design at Drexel University. I am a full-time graduate student and I aspire to become an interior designer. I love interior design and all things beautiful. Interior design has given me an outlet to be innovative and inspired. This summer I am very enthusiastic that I was chosen to be a design intern for AphroChic.

May 2009, I graduated from Temple University majoring in African American Studies. My academic program in African American Studies has given me a strong understanding of the historical, economic and psychological factors that affect people of African descent. Furthermore, the courses I have taken at Temple University have prepared me to take roles of effective agency; including social activist domains of professional and community life. Currently, while studying at Drexel University, I continue to work. Right now, I work in education and human services. The experience of working in education and human services gives me insight on how precious life is; while gaining a deeper appreciation for my life. The decision to study Interior Architecture and Design is not about change; it is about growth. I will always stay connected to the African-American community and will combine African-American aesthetics into interior design. Like AphroChic, I believe interior design should be a personal reflection of who you are. I look forward to interacting with all of you this Summer. Stay tuned for interior design updates from me.
